I've been playing DoTA for 6 years. I've played in pubs, i've played in TDA (until they became fags), and now i just play -ap. I also played normal wc3x for quite some time and i have a 60% average in games in my worst race (orc).

It's a voice communication program. It's free to download and simple to set up and use.
Headsets are generally cheap, you can probably find one that works for under $10.
If you want to try it out, just google ventrilo. Even if you don't have a mic for it, you can still listen to what other people are saying.
